Tai Chi is a martial art gaining popularity in the United States today. As a martial art it provides an effective means of self-defense for its practitioners.  As a healing art (Qigong) it provides alternative options for health-defense through holistic health care practices. There are five (5) major styles that are popular. They are Yang style, Chen style, Wu Style, Hao Style and Sun Style Tai Chi Chuan.

Sifu Jonathan B. Walker, LPN is a certified martial arts teacher conducting Tai Chi Chuan classes in Burlington County, New Jersey, USA. He is versed in Yang and Chen Styles of Tai Chi and Qigong and Reiki Therapies. His classes are taught for self-defense as well as for health-defense in addition to using Tai Chi philosophically as the basis for health programs for senior citizens.

Jonathan B. Walker has worked to improve the quality of life for others for more than three decades. He graduated from The School of Nursing in Southern California, San Bernardino Valley College in 1975 as the class President. He later expanded his health career to include human sexuality education and physical rehabilitation.

Walker was born in Princeton, NJ in 1949. He is a Vietnam Era veteran who served in the United States Army and completed U. S. Military Intelligence tours in the European and South East Asian theater with the United States Army Security Agency in Europe.

He has been involved in martial arts for more than 30 years. His education has been under the tutelage of Sensei Douglas Mitchell of Trenton, NJ; Sensei Abi Ad of Southern California; Sijo Leon Trescott, El Bey of Leon Trescott’s Kung Fu/Taiji Academy; Master Ren Guang Yi of The International Chen Style Taijiquan Association; Master FaXiang Hou of the QiGong Research Society and Master Jiang Jian-ye of Capital District Tai Chi/Kung Fu Association. He has been heavily influenced in his teachings by private studies with the late great renowned Grandmasters T. T. Liang and Jou, Tsung Hwa. See Personal Credits for more information about the people who have helped shape him and his future.

His first encounter with martial arts was as a teenager studying Judo. Later, he studied Tae Kwan Do (Korean Karate) while attending nursing school. When he was forty years old, Walker turned to the Chinese art of Tai Chi Quan to help improve his health. He has practiced this art for more than a decade and has been teaching it since 1994. He taught Tai Chi classes at Burlington County College for five years. In 1997, he created QiSsage Body Systems (QBS), a health care system that is founded on the integration of eastern and western health care philosophies and practices. In 2002, he developed two schools of practice under the cover of QBS. The first is “Three Mountains School of Taiji Quan” which is a dynamic martial arts system that incorporates holistic benefits. The second is “Three Mountains Healthways School” which is a health care program that employs the fundamentals and principles of Taiji and Qigong for enhancement of the quality of life. In 2004, he added another school, “Tai Chi for Seniors” Health Program designed specifically for senior citizens that uses the fundamentals of Tai Chi & QiGong to improve the quality of life by decreasing the incidents of falls in seniors. He has also been certified to teach the Exercise and Tai Chi Programs for the Arthritis Foundation.

Walker has been a successful competitor in local, regional and national Chinese Martial Arts Tournaments since 1991. He holds numerous trophies and medals ranging from 1st place to 3rd place in open competitions. In 1999, he was awarded Grand Championship titles in Forms & Weapons by the United Martial Arts Referee Association (U.M.A.R.A.) in its Regional Championship competition. He was also named the Martial Artist’s Student Representative of the United States for the inauguration of the United States of America Wushu Kung Fu Federation (USAWKF).

Walker is also an accomplished QiGong therapy practitioner. He uses this traditional Chinese healing method, similar to acupressure, to treat people with a wide range of health conditions from cancer rehabilitation to chronic health conditions such as arthritis. He incorporates the holistic practices of Tai Chi Quan and QiGong into exercise physiology, physical rehabilitation and general health maintenance. As a Reiki Master/Teacher, he conducts regular Reiki classes and therapy. As a graduate of the Institute of Hypnotherapy, Walker is a board Certified Hypnotherapist approved by the International Medical & Dental Hypnotherapy Association, American Board of Hypnotherapy, International Hypnosis Federation, and The International Association of Counselors and Therapists.

In April 2002, Walker received a Governor’s Proclamation from New Jersey and in April 2003, he received a Joint Legislative Resolution from the New Jersey Senate and General Assembly in recognition of World Tai Chi & QiGong Day. He organized this local event in conjunction with the international celebration to increase public awareness about the holistic benefits of eastern health practices.

Since 2003, Walker has been inducted into the Action Martial Arts Hall Of Fame and the World Karate Union Hall of Fame. In 2004, he received the “Man of the Year” award for his promotion of the values of Tai Chi. He has been named Co-Creator of World Tai Chi and QiGong Day and Co-Director of the Action Martial Arts Heaven & Earth Tai Chi Tournament. In 2005, Walker was appointed to the North American Advisory Committee for the Martial Arts of China Historical Society. In 2006, Walker was inducted into both the World Martial Arts League Hall of Fame and the London International Hall of Fame. In 2007, he was inducted into the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame and the Cambridge Who’s Who “Honor’s Edition” Registry Among Professionals and Executives.

Walker was selected by the New Jersey Institute for Successful Aging, University of Medicine & Dentistry, School of Osteopathic Medicine to participate in a six-month research study to learn of the affects of Tai Chi on Alzheimer’s patients. To view the findings that have been released from the study, click HERE.

Walker has been featured in performances at Six Flags Great Adventure as well as several news articles, including stories in The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Times of Trenton, Burlington County Times and The Community News.
